Students in this lesson will have to use the menu that they obtained from the field trip and use their language skills that they have aquired so far and put them into practice by translating the menu from the Chinese/English version into Spanish. As stated in the grading criteria, students will have to show their language abilities not just in language abilties, but also in group cooperation, individual performance on activities, and classroom discussion.
-To begin this process, students must have the work that needs to be translated in hand, which in this case, is the menu from the Chinese restaurant.
-This menu should be the bilingual version so it should already have the English translation from the Chinese characters.
-At this point, students will have to study the menu carefully, first finding what they already know from knowledge gained in class.
- After going through the menu and finding not only the vocabulary and sentence structure that they already know, but also noting in their notebooks the words and phrases that are not familiar to them, the students must then get into groups and do the group activity to ensure that the new vocabulary is learned. This activity for the group portion grade can be flashcards, worksheets that the students create themselves, or a game that utilizes the new vocaublary from the menu. During this time, the teacher will walk around and observe the groups to ensure that the students are learning the new material correctly and to correct any errors.
-After the group discussion, the students will come back together for a class discussion. During this time, the students will share with the class what they have learned and discovered. This will also serve as a reinforcement activity of the new vocabulary that will just help cement the new material making the actual translation easier so that they do not have to keep stopping to look things up in the dictionaries.
- After the class discussion, the students are then ready to begin the actual translation of the menu. See rubric for grading criteria.
